Online Bass Guitar Lessons
The bass is the heartbeat of any band — and learning to play it well is one of the most rewarding things a musician can do. Melody Music Co-op offers private bass guitar lessons online for students around the world. Whether your student wants to lock in a groove, learn music theory through the bass, or eventually play in a band, our teachers will get them there.
What You'll Learn
Our bass guitar curriculum is built around making students genuinely musical — not just technically competent. Lessons cover:
-
Proper technique — right and left hand, posture, tone production
-
Reading music and tablature
-
Scales, arpeggios, and music theory through the bass
-
Groove, rhythm, and playing with a metronome
-
Playing by ear and learning songs you love
-
Styles including rock, pop, funk, blues, jazz, and more
-
Band context — how the bass fits with drums, guitar, and other instruments
You'll also get the opportunity to perform in bi-annual recitals, and learn from experts in our bi-annual masterclasses!
What Age Can Students Start Bass?
Do I Need an Amp?
Bass for Band-Oriented Students
We typically start bass guitar students from around age 8–10, when students have enough hand size and coordination to handle the instrument comfortably. That said, every student is different — contact us and we'll give you an honest assessment based on your student's specific situation. Adult beginners are absolutely welcome at any age.
For home practice, a small practice amp (15–30 watts) is ideal but not required to start. A bass can be played quietly without an amp for early lessons. Your teacher can advise on a good beginner setup that fits your budget before you buy anything.
If your student's goal is to play in a band — school group, garage band, or otherwise — our teachers will tailor lessons specifically toward that. Learning to lock in with a drummer, read chord charts, and develop a feel for different styles is central to how we teach bass at Melody Music Co-op.
